Do you want to live more independently, but feel unsure about whether you can do it? Well, don’t forget every journey starts with a single step! Living in supported accommodation can be a great step towards a happier, more independent you.
There are a lot of accommodation options that are perfect for whichever stage you’re in. And we at Activ are here to help along the way, with advice, planning and placements.
Let’s take a look at some of the options available.
The Independent living option
You might already have your own place but would like some support at home. Or perhaps you are getting ready to make the move into a place all by yourself. Independent living might be the perfect option for you.
We can provide you with drop-in support to support you with a range of activities, whether it’s help with cleaning, learning to cook, making a budget or planning out your access and transport options.
This option is to give you the help you need to transition to fully independent living.
Make new friends in shared accommodation
If you’re not yet ready for your own place, or you’d like to live with housemates, shared disability accommodation is the other way to go. That way, you will have your own space and the freedom to do your own thing but still share the home with other housemates.
Many people find that one of the best things about it is making friends with your housemates. You can share meals and chill out when you want to, take part in activities like board games or just watching a show at home, or go out with your housemates. You might just find you make some of the best friends of your life!
With this option, you’ll also have access to support staff 24 hours a day, who are there to support you with your Independence goals.
New activities and hobbies
Supported accommodation isn’t just about where you live. It means that you can take part in activities in your home as well, learning new skills and even doing the hobbies you enjoy. You can be assisted in learning to cook, taking care of the garden, or maybe you’d like to learn some arts and crafts. It’s up to you, and we can help to give you ideas for what you want to do when you plan out your NDIS plan.
You’re supported all the way with community services
At Activ, our staff are trained in helping you achieve greater independence. As well as ongoing training and police clearance, many of our staff have additional qualifications In Individual support, disability, and first aid.
Our staff are there to get to know you and your individual needs, to support you in whatever way you choose. And we love to see our customers grow and gain confidence and independence! It’s probably the most rewarding part of the job.
Jacinda’s story
We have met so many great people who needed accommodation and have seen how their lives changed for the better. Let’s meet one of them right now, Jacinda, and hear her story!
Meet Jacinda “The best part is freedom, having fun” – Jacinda
Jacinda is living her best life with her housemates, which gives her the freedom to do her own thing while having friendship and support when she needs it.
Jacinda has got a lot out of learning to cook healthy meals and regularly cooks dinner for her and her housemates. Her support enabled her to be confident enough to get driving lessons as well. “The staff help me to get my lessons done. And my assessments and my appointments” she says.
But she doesn’t always need support – her Activ Team Leader Paula has been amazed to see her grow and do things on her own initiative in the supportive environment of her Activ home. “She cooks meals for her housemates, she organizes parties” says Paula. “It’s just awesome to see.”
